Aircraft Safety Ratings: What Do They Tell You?
A rating can offer useful evidence, but its criteria, holder, level and currency need to be understood.
Independent programmes such as ARGUS and WYVERN may provide information about an operator’s systems or records. Different programmes and levels assess different things.
Ask who holds the status
A rating may relate to an operator, broker or another participant. Confirm that the status being discussed applies to the organisation and proposed operation you think it does.
Understand scope and currency
Find out what the programme assesses, when the status was granted or renewed and whether it is current. A logo without context is not enough.
Keep the regulatory foundation clear
An independent rating does not replace the operating authority required for the flight, aircraft suitability, current crew qualifications or sound operational decision-making.
Before you book, ask
- Who holds the rating or certification, and is it current?
- What does that programme and level assess?
- Can the proposed operator, aircraft and crew be checked for this flight?
Treat a rating as evidence to understand, not a guarantee.
